Secrets On How To Do Custom Glass Etching

By Cecile Ingram

One might not have experienced making custom glass etching projects. This is really a creative way of turning usual kitchen wares into something more artistic and attractive like stamping some details on a plain soup bowl. These tips will serve as a guide to the process.

The first thing that will be needed is the stencil for the design and there are available pieces of vinyl which has already adhesive such as those used for wall decorations. These are usually sold in rolls in some craft stores or shops. The stencil is then placed over a vinyl shelf liner and is taped to have it being held in place.

The chosen letter, image or shape should then be traced and then cut this pattern to make the stencil. Use a craft cutter or a utility knife will do and hold this in ninety degrees so that it is kept perpendicular to the surface of the material. Peel off that part of the stencil cut so as to leave only the negative space created.

Procure a sheet of transfer paper or a contact paper will do as long as this piece has a sticky side. The front portion of the vinyl must be placed over it and then the sticky back part will be peeled away. Be sure that the object is already clean and if it is not, then clean it using a piece of cotton ball with alcohol.

Stick the back of the vinyl onto the glass surface where the imprint should be and ascertain that there should not be bubbles underneath. If there are any, press down your fingers firmly and release the trapped air into the opening of the stencil. If this would not be done, the result might be a mess.

Applying a layer of the etching cream on the exposed area is the next step and this should be done carefully. Make sure to cover only the pattern wanted to be printed and leave the cream as is according to the instruction in the package. The cream is an acidic chemical that etches away the surface and the imprint cannot be washed or rubbed off being permanent.

After leaving the chemical for the required time, wash it off thoroughly with running water and use fingers to rub it well. After which, the stencil can then be removed and the whole piece will have to be cleaned again with soap and water. Dry the thing and the task is really all done by the chemical applied.

In order to add more details on the design, scrap booking materials can be used to make it nicer. Another money saving tip is by using a painters tape which are sold at a cheap price in hardware stores. This could be taped on the surface of a sheet and the stencil will then be placed onto it before doing the carving.

Making a home project like custom glass etching, be cautious about keeping things away from children. In using the cream, be sure to wear gloves as the acidic agent is corrosive to the skin. Also be extra careful in using the sharp tools by making sure that the surface is well stabilized and hold the tool with a firm grip.
